OXFORDSHIRE v NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, 29 JUNE 2014

In the first game of the 2014-15 league season, using the new double X-IMP scoring system, our A-team lost 9-11, our B-team won 15-5 and our C-team won 19-1. A match report by John Williams appears here

OXFORDSHIRE v LEICESTERSHIRE, 6 APRIL 2014

In the final game of the 2013-14 league season, our A-team lost by 37 IMPs (5-15), our B-team won by 33 IMPs (15-5) and our C-team won by 15 IMPs (13-7). A match report by John Williams appears here.

These results meant that the A-team finished 6th in the Dawes League with 66 VPs, its lowest position for decades. But the B-team narrowly failed to take the Porter Trophy, finishing on 107 VPs, just behind Warks (109) and Glos (108). The C-team were 3rd in the Markham Trophy with 90 VPs, again behind Warks. Full results are here.

OXFORDSHIRE v STAFFS & SHROPS (Jan 12 2014)

The Oxfordshire squad enjoyed a good outing in the first county match of 2014. The A-team beat their SAS counterparts 18-2 while the B-team and C-teams both won 20-0. Well done to all the players involved. John Williams's match report appears here.

The most interesting board against Staffs was probably Board 9 where seven hearts was reached after an uncontested auction at three of the four A-team tables. This is what declarer (W) could see after the four of clubs was led:

A                                             Q7

KQ10432                                AJ65

K872                                       A93

K8                                           AJ105

How would you hope to make seven hearts on the four of clubs lead and how would you estimate your chances of success?

WORCESTERSHIRE V OXFORDSHIRE  (Dec 8)

The A team had a very poor first half and although they steadied the ship after half-time, that still resulted in a 3-17 loss. The B team bounced back from its loss by 145 IMPs in the last match to win 16-4 this time and the C team had a good close game, losing 8-12.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE V OXFORDSHIRE  (Nov 10)

The A team led narrowly at half-time but fell away badly in the second half to lose 2-18. The B suffered throughout to record a (possibly) record loss of 145 IMPs for 0-20 and the C team’s hopes drained away steadily for 3-17.

For his Christmas Competition in the Oxford Times, Nick Smith asked readers to focus on these cards from the county match against Gloucestershire:

SQJ83

HAQJ963

D872

C-

SA65

H-

DAK54

CAK8632

North opens 1NT (12-14) but you bid, somewhat haphazardly, to 6S. Yet you make it, despite best defence! North leads DQ. Nick asked:

(1) how do the cards lie?

(2) how do you make it? and

(3) how do you make 6H on the same lie and lead (as Andrew Lintott did v Glos)?

The answer may be found here.

Tollemache Qualifier (Nov 23-24, Daventry)
